MIN#DENVER2007-241 NEW!

EXCEPTIONAL!! Cabinet sized specimen of Covellite blades on Pyrite matrix!
I found this old timer on my travels to Montana and it is simply the largest specimen of
Covellite I have ever seen or offered on the website! The VERY iridescent Covellite blades
cover the matrix from top to bottom and exhibit some of the most intense coloration you will
ever find on a Butte Covellite. Shiny flashes of green, gold, purple, blue and red jump out
from the lustrous surfaces (green is definately not common). Overall, the specimen is
in great condition for its size considering the fragile nature of this scarce mineral. There
are a few incomplete blades here and there and the usual chips along the outer edge where
the specimen was trimmed from the matrix but most blades are sharp and intact and the few
that aren't don't detract from this amazing rock. The only better and larger specimen of Butte
Covellite that I've seen was in the Montana State Mineral Museum and it wasn't for sale.
* The story behind this specimen - I've been told that this specimen dates back to the
early 1900's when during Butte's boom mining days, a Mr. Trevillion of the Monument
Company used to pay miners one dollar for their best rock specimens. The miners would
use the money to buy drinks after a long shift underground and Trevillion built a large
and respectable mineral collection. Later, the collection was sold by Mr. Trevillion's
family to Duane Johnson of DJ's Minerals in Butte. I haven't verified all aspects of
this story yet but it's definately interesting and points to a great provenance. There is
a Trevillion-Johnson Memorial (Monument) Company in Butte dating back to 1889
and a Trevillion-Mole Monument Company is listed in Butte historical archives in
1916 as the subcontractor on a work order. Both companies were contracted to carve
and engrave tombstones and monuments and it's possible they merged into one.
The listed president of the Monument Company was a Mr. Samuel Trevillion Jr. who
came to Butte in the year 1903. His family was originally from Cornwall, England. *

From the Leonard Mine in Butte, Silver Bow County, Montana.
Measures 13.8 cm by 10.5 cm by 10.4 cm in size.
Comes with a custom made, labeled base.
